Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 was confirmed at a premises near Birsay, Orkney Islands in Scotland yesterday. The government statement does not include details on the species or number of birds impacted.
A 3-km protection zone and a 10-km surveillance zone have been declared. The zones, which took effect yesterday evening, restrict the movement of poultry, carcasses, eggs, used poultry litter and manure in order to prevent any further spread of disease.
Before yesterday there had not been an avian influenza outbreak in Scotland since 30 May.
