Nigeria contends with ASF outbreak
According to reporting in the BBC, nearly 300,000 pigs have been killed. The most affected farm in the cooperative is the main source of livelihood to almost 3,000 farmers.
The outbreak was reported at Oke Aro farm, a cooperative settlement managed by the Lagos State government. It is the largest pig farm in West Africa. Ayo Omirin, a farmer who works at the site, told the BBC that at least 99 percent of the pigs have been affected.
The farm is a key supplier of pig products in the region, but it often struggles to meet consumer demand.
Pig farming is often used as a route out of poverty for many in Nigeria. This outbreak puts the livelihoods of thousands of families at risk, the BBC’s Ronke Alo reports.
The state government in Lagos is taking steps to address the outbreak, including a public education campaign on how to protect surviving livestock and distributing food aid to affected farmers.
