According to reporting in the Hindustan Times, the Director of Manipur state veterinary and animal husbandry Dr Chaoba Singh said that the disease was detected in multiple areas of the Imphal East district and that the situation is under control.
“…the said areas have been sealed and sanitised. One km radius of the area has also been contained to prevent further spread of the disease,” Dr Chaoba said. “The surveillance is going on within 10 km radius of the areas too.”
African swine fever killed thousands of pigs in Assam in 2020. Manipur prohibited imports of pigs in an effort to contain the spread of the disease.
Dr Singh suspects that illegally imported pigs are linked to the recent outbreak.
